Grassroots Grants: The Devonian Trust

The Devonian Trust was created using a collection of dormant orthopaedic trusts which existed in the local area. The beneficiaries of these trusts has been identified as people with mobility issues. However, the owners of the trusts were now quite elderly, many residing in care homes and the day to day management of the trusts had become too much.

Devon Community Foundation was able to provide the trust owners with an attractive alternative, utilising Grassroots Grant: transfer the trust funds (in total £500,000) to a fund with Devon Community Foundation and receive a 1:1 match on top of their funds. The Devonian Trust was able to maintain it original aims, whilst the community foundation's infrastructure and network in the local medical community meant a panel of occupational therapists could be created to assess the merits of the grant applications. This way the community foundation manage all the trust administration and grant making requests, whilst the trust owners have the satisfaction of knowing that their money is being used to meet the needs of those with mobility issues and that they have made the most of this money via the 1:1 match.
