The Manifesto for Philanthropy

Match Fund Challenges (Background)

Local third sector funders across the country were invited by the Community Development Foundation to apply to become a local partner in delivering a £130million Grassroots Grants programme in their area. All of the community foundations in the South West applied and became successful partners in the programme.

The £130 million fund, which runs from 2008-2011 is divided into two parts:

  • an £80 million small grants fund for community organisations; and
  • a £50 million endowment programme to enable local funders to generate additional donations on a matched basis and invest them in endowments, thereby building their capacity to provide long-term funding for front line community organisations.

Grants of £250 - £5,000 are available to voluntary and community groups across the south west which meet the following criteria:

  • Annual income of less than £30,000
  • In operation for at least 12 months
  • Volunteer led
  • Address local community needs

It is recognised by the South West Community Foundations that Grassroots Grants has provided much-needed access to small grants for local community groups and organisations in England and has strengthened the broad range of relationships community foundations have within the local community.
